          Playbook

Anja Tietze Lahrmann, Magnus Pind Bjerre & Rebekka Bohse Meyer / Sigrid Aakvik / Denmark

Truth is cancelled. Fake profiles multiply online, strangers reach out with uncertain motives, and distinguishing truth from fiction is becoming increasingly difficult. Playbook is a documentary operatic live-performance based on real romance scam scripts, exploring the connections between fraud and money, love and language, fiction and truth.

Playbook is an innovative performance at the intersection of video, theatre and music, examining the grey area between fiction and reality. Playbook is a documentary operatic live-performance based on real romance scam manuscripts, known as “playbooks”. Tightly interweaving music, imagery and language taken directly from the playbooks, the work explores the relationships between fraud and money, love and language, fiction and truth. The work is developed in collaboration between video artist Magnus Pind and composer Anja Tietze Lahrmann.

Most of us have encountered scams in one form or another. As fake profiles multiply online, AI-generated spam grabs our attention, and strangers reach out from nowhere, we’ve grown accustomed to navigating the fine line between real and fake. And yet, romance scams remain widespread. All scams are built on the same simple, repeatable structures and psychological triggers: fear, hope, and confusion. Playbook investigates the eight stages that make up every romance scam: the put up, the play, the rope, the tale, the convincer, the breakdown, the send, and the blow off. These stages form eight musical chapters that shape the one-hour performance.

At the core of the work is a strict synchronization between sound, image and performance. The musicians perform the scammer-script live, by triggering words, phrases and graphic elements on screen along with musical notes, rhythms and gestures.

Playbook examines the all-too-common, yet bizarre world of internet romance scams, asking: What is the connection between emotional manipulation and money? And how do we navigate between what is real, and what is not?

Playbook is created in collaboration between video artist Magnus Pind, composer Anja Tietze Lahrmann, performance designer Rebekka Bohse Meyer, and is performed by the musical ensemble K!art, 10 performers, and an opera singer. The work is co-produced by Click Festival (The Culture Yard, Elsinore, DK) and will premiere at Copenhagen Opera Festival in 2027.
