THE POETIC TURN: DEPICTING CRISES THROUGH MEANS OF FICTION

Crisis and conflict are at the core of journalism and fact-driven documentary cinema. But what happens when filmmakers turn to poetic or experimental cinematic forms to depict conflict or trauma? What can other types of cinematic language offer in contrast to mainstream documentary or reportage coverage, and what are some of the challenges or limitations when adding layers of artifice or artistic expression?

Speakers

Gali Gold

Head of Cinema at the Barbican Centre, London. Responsible for the programme and operation of 3 cinema screens as part of an arts centre. Over 20 years experience in film programming and exhibition, curating seasons and special cinema events for diverse audiences, from new releases to global cinema. Her PhD thesis focused on women documentary filmmakers and she is a trustee of Sheffield DocFest.

Birgitte Stærmose

An internationally acclaimed writer-director of award-winning shorts and feature films. For the past five years Stærmose has worked internationally as lead director on drama series for HBO, Starz and Netflix. AFTERWAR is a passion project that has spanned 15 years.

Larissa Sansour

Larissa Sansour is a Palestinian-Danish visual artist and director. She represented Denmark at the 58th Venice Biennale.
