Scratching the Surface

Wiktor Filip Gacparski / Alexander Mettin / Germany & Poland

Can the human soul be digitized? After the loss of her father, Line Hoven embarks on a personal journey into the world of digital and generative art. She seeks the essence of creativity, navigating the emotional depths of life and death in an immersive VR experience.

The modern landscape of our reality is changing faster than we can grasp, and the magical future is closer than ever before. Yet, being present, here and now, seems increasingly distant.

“Scratching the Surface” is an innovative VR project that immerses viewers in the realms of analog and digital art through the eyes of acclaimed artist and illustrator Line Hoven. This hybrid experience combines 180° documentary film with an interactive 3D-360° environment, exploring profound questions about life, technology, and art.

Transitioning from analog hand-scratched artwork to digital simulation and branching narratives, Line’s creative process presents us with two contrasting art worlds: one driven by AI’s generated “imagination,” and the other deeply rooted in human memory and emotion. Both worlds reflect on the authenticity of art and the expression of emotional depth. But which will resonate more with us?

The viewers’ subconscious choice will lead to different endings, emphasizing either the soul of human creativity or the untapped potential of intelligent technology.

Using advanced VR technology, “Scratching the Surface” creates an emotionally engaging and thought-provoking experience. With built-in interactive elements, it pushes the boundaries of cinematic storytelling into new, hybrid realms.
