The inherent contradiction within documentary lies in its tethering to reality, while simultaneously being a creative treatment of actuality. This paradox has sparked a pervasive suspicion of the documentary genre and its claim to represent the “real”. However, today, an increasing number of artists turn to cinema and documentary to create new accounts of the world. This afternoon, we look at how filmmakers and artists use moving images to transcend and transform the immediately visible, and give form to what is beyond human perception.
