A MORNING WITH JOHAN GRIMONPREZ

09:30 - 11:00 Wednesday 20th Mar 2024 / 90 min

Johan Grimonprez excels at directing film essays bringing together key historical moments and cultural elements. Join us for an exploration of the relations between african american jazz music, civil rights and decolonization in Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat.

Grimonprez, who reached international acclaim with Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y (1997), tracing the history of airplane hijacking as portrayed by mainstream television media – Double Take (2009) exploring the Cold War and the films of Alfred Hitchcock, or Shadow World (2016), comes back with a timely story in Soundtrack to a Coup d’État (2024), winner of the Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation at Sundance, and now screening at CPH:DOX. In his new film, he explores relations between african american jazz music, civil rights and decolonization, still speaking to today’s geopolitical terrain for Belgium and Congo; where jazz musicians work as a soundtrack to the archives and testimonies revealing the CIA covert operations to assassinate Congo’s prime minister, Patric Lumumba.
