Yugo Goes to America
Filip Grujić & Aleksa Borković / Serbia & Croatia / 2026 / World Premiere / 96 min
Three young friends from Belgrade drive from New York to Los Angeles in a Yugo – a cult relic of a car from the 1980s. A docu-comedy and a road trip with many unexpected encounters.
Once upon a time, it was proudly exported from the Balkans to the rest of the world. Later, it was called the worst car ever made. Today, the Yugo is a beloved cult relic from the past – and it still looks like it was designed by an 8-year-old. Three young friends from Belgrade go on a road trip in a Yugo across the US, following in the wheel tracks of the forgotten car brand.
Along the way, their trusty Yugo has to visit the mechanic several times, as long as they can find someone who knows how to repair it. This leads them to many unexpected and cheerful encounters with Americans of all ages and beliefs. But the journey also connects many unexpected historical events across the Atlantic. For the three young friends, all born during the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the trip through from New York to Los Angeles also becomes a personal journey of discovery and an unforgettable experience – not least when it’s 42 degrees in Texas and you’re driving a Yugo without air conditioning.
