          Ben Joseph Andrews & Emma Roberts / Australia / Mixed Reality (MR) / 2023 / 10 min

An intimate mixed reality docu-essay exploring the phenomenon of derealisation, inviting audiences to reflect on the fragility of perception.

Artist Ben Joseph Andrews lives with a condition called vestibular migraine, which impacts his sense of orientation, balance and spatial awareness. During bad flare-ups, it can also alter his experience of reality—a neurological phenomenon called “jamais vu”.

Sitting at a desk, Andrews guides you with his voice through a series of actions with everyday objects, which suddenly feel awkward and clumsy—something as simple as leafing through a book feels strange. How does this experience affect your image of your environment, of the material world, of yourself?

          About the artists

Ben Joseph Andrews and Emma Roberts are an artist duo based in regional Australia. Their work integrates XR within audience-led installations to instill a sense of awe and wonder to the mundane.
