The Lost Golden Lotus
Chisato Minamimura / United Kingdom & China / Film installation / 2025 / 14 min
'The Lost Golden Lotus' reimages China’s foot-binding legacy through multisensory art and Deaf-led performance, connecting historical beauty ideals to today’s exacting body standards.
Artist statement
‘The Lost Golden Lotus’ is a powerful new immersive film installation created through a unique international collaboration between Chisato Minamimura (UK/Japan) and Alice Hu Xiaoshu (China). Bringing together their artistic perspectives and research, they explore and reimagine the legacy of China’s historical practice of foot binding.
This collaborative project invites audiences into a world shaped by beauty and pain, where projected film, scent, taste, and tactile soundscapes converge to unearth the hidden histories of the “three-inch golden lotus”, once a symbol of femininity and social status, now a site of reflection, resistance, and cultural contemplation.
At the heart of the film is Visual Vernacular, a Deaf-led performance language rooted in gesture, movement, and sign. This approach fosters a shared space where both Deaf and hearing audiences can experience the narrative equally, opening space for conversations about beauty standards, past, present, and future, alongside questions of identity, autonomy, and cultural legacy.
