              America was once called ‘the last great experiment in democracy.’ Forgoing traditional interviews in favor of highly immersive observation, this cinematic film documents the four-year period of political upheaval from 2017 to 2020, capturing the kaleidoscopic breadth of American life across the political spectrum to create a deeply affecting portrait of the USA and its people at this historical moment.

              Filmed in beautiful black and white across the nation, ‘The Great Experiment’ offers an intimate archive of the recent past as it weaves together vastly different American lives and discovers the unexpected and illuminating ways in which they intersect. What emerges is a haunting meditation on American democracy that allows us to bear witness to this fraught political moment and share an all-too-rare moment of real reflection. Seemingly disparate narratives compete to reveal the truth, until we realize it is only by holding a multiplicity of perspectives that the truth can be understood.
