THE LINE-UP OF CPH:CONFERENCE 2024 IS READY

Filmmakers Alex Gibney, Johan Grimonprez, and Laura Huertas Millan, along with industry figures Jessica Harrop (Sandbox), Marie Nelson (Hot Docs) among many others will be sharing the stage with a wide array of documentary experts and visionaries at CPH:DOX’ upcoming CPH:CONFERENCE 2024 themed ‘RE:BUILDING NARRATIVES’.

CPH:CONFERENCE, curated in partnership with the long-standing training initiative Documentary Campus, is thrilled to unveil the line-up for 2024. Back within a refreshed format, this year’s edition will gather industry leaders and visionaries to share their experiences, insights, and strategies for fostering inclusivity and collaboration in the documentary landscape, and to rediscover unconventional approaches that defy the norms of non-fiction.

“It is the mission of Documentary Campus to empower filmmakers and other media professionals to engage in meaningful conversations, create new partnerships, promote a more inclusive industry and bring important stories to audiences worldwide – to make a difference. We are thankful for the long-lasting and sustainable partnership with CPH:DOX and wish you exciting days at our joint CPH:CONFERENCE programme.” says Donata von Perfall, Managing Director of Documentary Campus

“Amid constant change, CPH:CONFERENCE carves out a moment to pause, reflect, and mobilize. It’s a space where the art of documentary filmmaking and the heart of activism intersect, challenging us to reimagine the stories we tell and the impact they have. From the DISCO Network’s groundbreaking ‘Declaration of Independence’ to the transformative dialogues of the Climate Story Lab Nordic, this conference is a catalyst for those committed to exploring and addressing the pressing issues of our time. Here, we unite to rethink narratives and inspire action, embodying the belief that through understanding and creativity, we can forge a path forward.”, says Mara Gourd-Mercado, Head of Industry & Training of CPH:DOX

The Independence Project (March 18)

The Conference will kick off with a brand new collaboration with the DISCO Network, made of Ambulante, AFLAMUNA, DocsMX, Doc Society, DocSP, Docubox, In-Docs, and India Docs, who will present and workshop ‘Our Declaration of Independence’. This session, led by Jad Abi-Khalil (AFLAMUNA) and Beadie Finzi (Doc Society), is a result of a special initiative aiming to articulate the unique importance of independent documentaries to culture, society, and democracy, and to advocate for the resources and platforms they deserve. The session will take place on Monday, March 18, 10:30 – 12:00, in Social Cinema.

Mornings with Filmmakers (March 19-21)

The first part of the day at CPH:CONFERENCE 2024 will unfold in two sections of thought-provoking conversations with filmmakers featured in this year’s CPH:DOX programme. ‘A MORNING WITH’ (09:30-11:00), moderated by Thom Powers, will start the day off with filmmakers deep diving into their own multifaceted experiences. Alex Gibney, Johan Grimonprez, and Asmae El Moudir will reflect upon the creative challenges they face as filmmakers, the lessons they carry forward into their future projects and the innovative paths they intend to explore in questioning the status quo.

Following these are ‘FILM:MAKERS IN DIALOGUE’ (11:30-13:00), moderated by Wendy Mitchell, where filmmakers behind two featured films will engage in discussions about their latest projects. From following subjects over many years to transitioning from journalism to filmmaking, to envisioning filmmaking as activism or impact, and navigating intricate family dynamics, all while pioneering innovative cinematic languages—these are just a few of the themes that will be explored by directors Alina Simone, Shiori Ito, Sissel Dargis Morell, and many other.

Re:Building Narratives (March 19-21)

Under the banner ‘Re:Building Narratives’, the afternoons at CPH:CONFERENCE 2024 will explore accessibility and equity in documentary from a variety of curated perspectives for each day – Derren Lawford (SOCIETY), Nanna Rebekka (ART) and Kat Cizek (SCIENCE). Each panel explores pressing topics within filmmaking, production, & distribution through an innovative lens, enriched by the respective themes. Some of the confirmed names in the lineup include Victoria Thomas, Lizzie Gillet & Sigrid Dyekjær; Lisa Jackson, and Mila Aung-Thwin.

Climate Justice in Storytelling (March 22)

The Conference concludes on Friday, March 22 (10:00-13:30) with the ‘CLIMATE STORY LAB NORDIC’ program, part of a global initiative led by Doc Society. The event is the culmination of the inaugural program that brought together climate experts, activists and creatives from the Nordic countries to develop impactful stories and engagement strategies to inspire meaningful action. Centering around climate justice, the panel discussions curated by Diego Galafassi (Hum Studio Interactive) and Anne Gerd (Differ Media), will explore the multifaceted nature of climate storytelling across biophysical, social, and spiritual dimensions..
