À demain sur la Lune / World premiere of a poetic French film about a terminally ill woman’s final chapter
Monday, March 24 at 19:30 at Empire Bio
On the outskirts of a small town, a figure rides slowly through the forest on a horse that glows in the twilight like a dream from another world. This fairytale-like image speaks volumes about the tone of this warm, wise, and deeply moving film about 39-year-old Amandine, who is terminally ill and has only a few months left to live. Scenes from her life in the hospital and at home paint a sensuous and unsentimental portrait of an ordinary person with extraordinary vitality. Meet the award-winning director Thomas Balmès at the film’s world premiere in the DOX:AWARD competition.
Predators / Inside the 2000s reality show that exposed online predators
Monday, March 24 at 21:15 at Empire Bio
Between 2004 and 2007, American audiences tuned in to the reality show To Catch a Predator, where host Chris Hansen and his team used decoy chatrooms to lure men into the harsh spotlight of public exposure. The Sundance-selected film Predators revisits the controversial show to explore what it can teach us today about journalism, accountability, and ethical grey zones. And there’s plenty to unpack. Director and former CPH:DOX award winner David Osit will also be present.
City Child / A hypnotic cinematic experience from Austin Lynch
Monday, March 24 at 21:45 at Cinemateket
It’s winter in Berlin. Two couples meet, and though only a few glances and even fewer words are exchanged, the outlines of a dark plot begin to emerge — as if a psychological thriller is unfolding just outside the frame. Following up his 2017 CPH:DOX selection Gray House, the fiercely original Austin Lynch returns with a hypnotic, atmospheric, and visually stunning film that demands to be experienced in a dark cinema. Meet the filmmaker at the screening.
The Gardener, the Buddhist & the Spy / World premiere with director Q&A
Monday, March 24 at 19:00 at Grand Teatret
Cynical spy for the asbestos industry, or whistleblower wrongly accused? For five years, Rob Moore posed as a journalist to gain the trust of environmental activists in their battle against the global asbestos mafia — while secretly working undercover as a spy for the industry itself. Hear the full, wild story at the world premiere, followed by a talk with director Håvard Bustnes, who knows Moore’s case better than anyone.
The Helsinki Effect / World premiere of a witty film about the beginning of the end of the Cold War
Monday, March 24 at 16:30 at Dagmar
The Cold War was frozen solid when leaders from East and West met in Helsinki in the summer of 1975 to discuss security and cooperation. It was a high-stakes game of political chess with world peace on the line — and a historic event no one could quite agree on the significance of. The Helsinki Effect dusts off the archives and analyzes the diplomatic theatre with sharp irony, vivid insight, and an eye for vanity, pettiness, and profanity between the lines. A clever, entertaining, and illuminating film that takes (world) history seriously enough to also spotlight its curious footnotes.
