The Power of Civil Disobedience
If I can’t change anything with my voice, I can do it with my body. In collaboration with Demokrati Garage, we invite you to a talk on activism, mobilization, and the life cycle of social movements. Join activists José Arce and Nanna Dahler, alongside Alex Cuzzolino from Ulydig Retshjælp, for a conversation on civil disobedience. The conversation will be moderated by Julia Suárez-Krabbe, who researches state-authorised racism in Danish departure centres, among other topics.
‘Everybody to Kenmure Street’ takes place on an early Eid morning in 2021, when a neighbourhood in Glasgow spontaneously mobilises to stop the deportation of their two neighbours. The documentary shows the power of putting your body on the line to stand up against injustice and how solidarity can produce real results.
The deportation is stopped, and the neighbourhood wins. The victory gives cause to reflect on the question: How does civil disobedience take shape in Denmark, where deportations are often less visible?
Drawing on the story told in the film, we will explore how activists in Denmark mobilize, organize, and carry out actions. At a time when this form of activism is increasingly being criminalized and becoming more risky, we will also focus on the legal framework surrounding civil disobedience.
Meet José Arce, anti-racist activist from the Freedom of Movement Research Collective, Nanna Dahler, former No Borders activist and PhD candidate in gender studies, Alex Cuzzolino from Ulydig Retshjælp (Disobedient Legal Aid), and Julia Suárez-Krabbe, researcher in racism, human rights and decolonisation, who will moderate the conversation.
Join us for an inspiring talk at Demokrati Garage, an independent meeting place and innovation space in Copenhagen’s Nordvest district dedicated to strengthening and renewing democracy. The venue is open to everyone and provides a framework for democratic participation, community, collaboration, and dialogue.
This conversation will be in English.
