The Hidden Processes of Migration Control

What happens behind the scenes in migration control? Come inside Demokrati Garage and gain a rare insight into the mechanisms that normally remain hidden, with Ahlam Chemlali, researcher in migration and Martin Lemberg-Pedersen, associate professor at the Centre for War Studies.

What systems, assessments and decision-making processes shape people’s opportunities to cross borders and seek asylum? The DOX:AWARD nominated film ‘The Sandbox’ provides insight into how migration control has become a black box and how large private companies make money from border control, while refugee camps and borders become arenas for the development of new technology that restricts the freedom of movement of people on the run.

The panel includes Ahlam Chemlali, researcher in migration, displacement and borders, and Martin Lemberg-Pedersen, associate professor at the Centre for War Studies, who will jointly explore the technology behind the process and discuss what is happening in a Danish context in relation to border control and asylum processes.

The screening is presented in collaboration with Demokrati Garage, an independent meeting place and innovation space in Copenhagen’s Nordvest neighbourhood, which aims to strengthen and renew democracy. It is located in a former car repair shop and smithy and functions as a community where various actors work together on democratic innovation, participation and new methods for engaging more people in society. The place is open to everyone and focuses on democratic participation, community, collaboration and dialogue.
