The Forgotten Allies: Rojava after the War Against IS

Do the Kurds have any friends other than the mountains? Meet the director behind 'The Phantom Pain of Rojava' Maryam Embrahimi in conversation with Joanna Palani, who previously fought for the pro-Kurdish forces against Islamic State, and Naila Bugyi-Bozo, a former doctor stationed in Rojava. The conversation is moderated by assistant professor in international security, Hetav Rojan, and revolves around the current political landscape in Rojava.

Once praised by the West for keeping terrorists at bay, ‘The Phantom Pain of Rojava’ shows how guerrilla fighters in Rojava now find themselves without their allies in the struggle to preserve their autonomous region in north-eastern Syria.

With the documentary as a starting point, the conversation after the screening expands into a discussion of the political ideals behind Rojava and the current situation following the Syrian government’s decision to integrate the SDF into the national military structure. What might a Syria after the fall of the Assad regime mean for the Kurdish population and for Rojava’s self-determination?

Director Maryam Ebrahimi will participate in the panel alongside former fighter Joanna Palani and doctor Naila Bugyi-Bozo. All three have spent time in Rojava and will bring their experiences from the region to the conversation. The conversation will be moderated by assistant professor Hetav Rojan and will focus on the prospects for Kurds in a new Syria.

This conversation will be in English.
