‘Rule of Stone’ + Talk: Eyal Weizman – architecture & power
Meet architect Eyal Weizman in a conversation about the aesthetic, ideological, and politically strategic role of architecture in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
“In Israel, there is a law requiring the use of local limestone, Jerusalem stone, when constructing new buildings in Jerusalem. On the surface, the stone is meant to ensure the city retains its aesthetic character. But beneath the surface, law, stone, and architecture have been used as a silent but effective method to marginalize Palestinian neighborhoods since Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in 1967. This is the subject of Danae Elon’s excellent documentary Rule of Stone.
After the film screening, we invite you to an in-depth conversation with star architect Eyal Weizman, who heads Forensic Architecture and has researched how architecture is used to maintain and exercise power. The conversation, moderated by Lotte Kaarsholm Folke (debate editor, Politiken), explores Weizman’s new and independent observations through his work and research into the hidden power of architecture and its complex connection to the maintenance – or destruction – of human rights. The conversation is presented in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy and is in English.
