Masculine camouflage and performativity – Jaripeo + talk
Join us for the screening of 'Jaripeo' followed by a Q&A with the directors on masculine camouflage, performativity and gender expression. And stay for the Hyper Expression Party afterward where we celebrate gender expression in our very own queer jaripeo!
Come and join us for a screening of the film ‘Jaripeo’.
Every year, hundreds of Mexicans gather for the annual jaripeo, a traditional rodeo show celebrating masculinity. Adrenaline pumps through the blood, and the air is thick with testosterone: we’re talking full speed ahead with rodeo bulls, cowboy hats, and Levi’s jeans. But beneath the surface of this spectacular show lies a queer subculture of hidden glances, fleeting touches, and secret meetings in the cornfields far away from the hypermasculine arena. We meet macho cowboys who have come out of the closet and a flamboyant diva who effortlessly takes the bull by the horns. Jaripeo is a sensual exploration of performative masculinity, secret desires and longings that breathe beneath the surface of a rodeo show.
Meet directors Efraín Mojica and Rebecca Zweig from Jaripeo for a reflection on masculine camouflage and the strategies used to fit in. The conversation will take its starting point in the film’s themes and revolve around masculinity, forms of expression, and performativity, and will be moderated by DJ and social worker, Yaqub Abdirahman.
After the Q&A, stay for Charlottenborg’s opening party, where the building will be transformed into a living queer rodeo! The evening will feature a spectacular Drag Rodeo competition, where courage, attitude, and showmanship mean more than the rules.
This ticket gives you access to the party, so you don’t need to buy an extra ticket.
The Q&A is in English.
