Daughters of Uprising
In this conversation, we focus on the stories of relatives when a family member is taken into political captivity. Join us as Libyan director Jihan and Maryam Al-Khawaja, Bahraini-Danish human rights activist, share their own experiences in the search for truth and the fight for justice. Moderated by Naima Yasin, Head of Secretariat at SAGA.
In the documentary ‘My Father and Qaddafi’, Jihan pieces together the disappearance of her father, the peaceful opposition leader to Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, and her mother’s 19-year search to find him. Maryam Al-Khawaja is the daughter of Denmark’s only prisoner of conscience, Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, who is imprisoned in Bahrain for his leadership in the peaceful uprising against the country’s regime in 2011. The conversation will be personal and intimate, giving rise to reflections on the past, present, and future, both in terms of individual experiences and the broader struggle for human rights.
This conversation will be held in English.
