CERN: Standing Together in the Name of Science
Meet the director Alex Kiehl and the producer Elin Rhys of the film 'The Peace Particle' in a conversation about the unique project that is CERN.
Today in increasingly precarious times, and as wars across the world threaten to undermine its principles, ‘The Peace Particle’ gives us unprecedented access to CERN: a playground for Nobel prize winners and source of many discoveries – and conspiracy theories – over the years. Scientists from Afghanistan, America, Palestine and Israel have worked side by side for decades, even when their nations were mortal enemies.
This spirit of open-ness and peaceful collaboration has continued for 70 years – until Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. This aggression ran against everything CERN stands for, with lasting consequences for Russia’s future involvement at CERN. ‘The Peace Particle’ links what’s happening overground, politically and culturally, with the efforts of the scientists, deep underground. After the screening, you can meet the director Alex Kiehl and the producer Elin Rhys, in conversation about why science is the ulitimate unifier and their love of CERN.
