The Way Elsewhere
Eirini Vourloumis / Greece / 2026 / International Premiere / 82 min
Three experienced taxi drivers roam the streets of Athens dreaming of art and new beginnings in a nocturnal and poetic film for night owls.
The consequences of the economic crisis are still itching like a wool sweater in Greece. But in the restless streets of Athens, three experienced taxi drivers continue to drive around dreaming of art, music, and new beginnings as they search for both passengers and the meaning of life. As in Jim Jarmusch’s legendary ‘Night on Earth’, destinies and stories are closely intertwined in the night.
One is a family man and actor from Nigeria. Another sings in small clubs at night, chasing the sweetness of recognition and a place in the spotlight. And a third is a veteran driver with an enormous fondness for owls and trees, who is now approaching his last day of work after 50 years in his taxi.
With the Acropolis, the lights and darkness of the big city, and the country’s economic crisis as a backdrop, we accompany the three men behind the wheel and – when the car is parked and the sun rises – when they transform from drivers into their true selves. ‘The Way Elsewhere’ is a lyrical portrait of modern Athens about three quiet dreamers who are fighting for a life full of meaning and beauty.
