The Shadow Scholars
Eloise King / United Kingdom / 2024 / 98 min
Thousands of young, highly educated Kenyans make a living ghostwriting papers for Western students. An exposé of a murky academic underworld that has become a billion-dollar business.
After learning about a network of highly educated Kenyans writing essays, theses and dissertations for Western students for payment, Oxford professor Patricia Kingori travels to Nairobi to unravel the ghostwriters working in the shadows.
She meets Mercy, a single mother who supports herself and her child by writing papers night after night. She is just one of the estimated 50,000 Kenyans who can be hired online for academic ghostwriting – often under extreme time pressure, for low pay and without recognition for their work.
‘The Shadow Scholars’ sheds light on an invisible workforce. What does it mean for the education system when knowledge can be bought and academic degrees can be acquired without effort? Filmmaker Eloïse King pulls the shadowy global billion-dollar industry out of the shadows and into the light.
