The Musician And The Whale
Valentin Paoli / France / 2026 / 83 min
An electronic composer sets out to sea, where his music evokes a deep, poetic resonance in a humpback whale. Can we communicate with animals through music?
The world is full of music. Not only among humans, but also throughout the animal kingdom. Yet it comes as something of a surprise when electronic musician Rone discovers that people have posted videos online showing whales coming right up to their boat when they play Rone’s pulsating music.
So the musician sets off on an expedition with a group of marine biologists and experts to seek out the whales, learn more about their musical communication, and, not least, try to make music with them. And if that doesn’t work, then at least music for them. Far from the coast, surrounded by nothing but water and sky, a quiet, moving conversation arises between humans and whales.
What does the whale respond with? Does it sing along or create its own echo in the depths? This year’s most visually captivating music film is a deeply fascinating – and very musical! – study of communication between humans and other species.
