The Golden Spurtle
Constantine Costi / United Kingdom & Australia / 2025 / World Premiere / 75 min
Welcome to the Oatmeal World Cup - and if that sounds gray and boring, think again! A warm and genuinely funny Scottish film about finding the greatest meaning in the smallest things.
Did you know that you have to stir clockwise when you stir your oatmeal? Otherwise you’re letting the devil into your porridge. Everyone knows this – at least in the village of Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands. For 30 years the town has hosted the World Porridge Championships.
This year it’s a special championship because it’s the last time Charlie Miller will be in charge of the festivities. His health is failing, and now it’s time for the warm-hearted Scotsman to pass on the spurtle. We are with Charlie and the deeply dedicated World Cup competitors in the weeks leading up to and during the championships, where an incredible cast of characters make culinary creations out of oatmeal, water and salt.
Making the most out of almost nothing is an art that filmmaker Constantine Conti already masters to perfection. It’s impossible not to laugh out loud and shed a tear or two when the oatmeal really starts to burn. But as we all know, the most important thing is not to win, but to be a part of the game.
