Siri Hustvedt – Dance Around the Self

          Sabine Lidl / Germany & Switzerland / 2026 / 110 min

The Norwegian-American author recounts her life journey from her and her husband Paul Auster's beautiful home in New York. A beautiful and sincere film about choosing a life of literature and art.

Young, curious, and full of drive, Siri Hustvedt leaves the wide, quiet landscapes of Minnesota and plunges into the pulsating life of New York City. In search of the protagonist for her first novel, she embarks on a journey that leads her to become one of the most compelling voices in contemporary American literature.

From her and her husband Paul Auster’s beautiful home in Brooklyn, Hustvedt recounts her life’s journey in Sabine Lidl’s sincere portrait film. An honest and sensual film about choosing to live a life with literature. The Norwegian-American Hustvedt made that life choice early on, and her encounter with Paul Auster in New York was a turning point for both of them. With the city’s vibrant cultural life as a backdrop, we are invited into her unique way of living and thinking. And into a body of work that is inextricably intertwined with life’s great themes: love and farewell.
