          Paula Cury Melo / Dominican Republic, Germany & Mexico / 2026 / World Premiere / 70 min

A young filmmaker's graceful and courageous film from the Dominican Republic, where women speak openly about living in a country where abortion is banned - without exception.

What does it mean to live as a woman in a country where abortion is banned without exception? Through intimate testimonies and simple, almost picturesque portraits, a number of women in the Dominican Republic recount their experiences with forced motherhood and illegal abortions.

The country has one of the world’s most restrictive laws, where abortion is totally banned even in cases of rape, incest or danger to the mother’s life. Through each of the women’s courageous, personal stories, we understand the far-reaching consequences of the country’s body politics. While the country’s politicians debate a new bill for the criminal code, which has not been updated since 1884, young filmmaker Paula Cury Meo dissects the stigmatizing barriers that force young girls to risk both their lives and their freedom in a society where an unwanted pregnancy can lead to a life sentence.
