Memory of Princess Mumbi
Damien Hauser / Kenya, Switzerland & Saudi Arabia / 2025 / 79 min
In a futuristic Africa, a filmmaker falls in love with his protagonist and loses control of his film. A playful and deeply original sci-fi mockumentary unlike anything you've ever seen before.
The year is 2093. In the futuristic African country of Umata, filmmaker Kuve travels around documenting life after a devastating war in the 2070s. He expects to find ruins and despair, but instead meets a woman full of joie de vivre. This is where Mumbi enters the story. She agrees to appear in the film, and Kuve falls head over heels for her. But Mumbi carries a deep secret. Soon, the filming develops into a love triangle between a film director, an actress, and… a prince.
With minimal resources and maximum imagination, Swiss-Kenyan filmmaker Damien Hauser has created a funky sci-fi mockumentary that even George Lucas would envy. With the help of artificial intelligence, a lavish universe of kingdoms, digital illusions, and futuristic mythology emerges. In ‘Memory of Princess Mumbi’, the imagination runs wild, and the result is a grand vision created on a shoestring budget.
