Ghost Elephants
Werner Herzog / United States / 2025 / 99 min
German film legend Werner Herzog is back. This time, he has joined an expedition into the jungles of Angola to search for a mysterious herd of giant ghost elephants.
Legend has it that a herd of mysterious ghost elephants lives in the highlands of Angola. They are said to be direct descendants of Henry, the largest elephant ever seen. For a decade, South African biologist Steve Boyes has been searching for these legendary animals, which are said to live in an uninhabited forest area the size of England.
The existence of these enormous elephants has never been proven, but now it’s time to find out. Boyes and Herzog gather the best trackers from Namibia and Angola and set out with them on an expedition to find the elephants. But as the journey progresses, it is all the small details that come together to form a bigger picture of an ecstatic truth. ‘Ghost Elephants’ is a Werner Herzog classic with roots in ‘Moby-Dick.’ A search for something you don’t really know is real or a fantasy that someone (perhaps Herzog himself?) has invented.
