Every Little Thing

Every Little Thing

Sally Aitken / Australia / 2024 / European Premiere / 93 min

Hummingbirds are the fairies of nature's grand fairy tale. But for a woman who has dedicated her life to saving them from her Los Angeles mansion, the magical creatures are more than just cute.

The Sundance hit ‘Every Little Thing’ is a film as light, fragile and magical as the hummingbirds it has devoted its poetic attention to. In a huge mansion in the hills above Hollywood, Terry Masear has dedicated her life (and her Eden-like garden) to caring for orphaned and injured hummingbirds. And if all the reviews agree on how corny that might sound, they have been just as unanimous on how unusual and almost miraculous an experience the story of Terry and her hummingbird clinic soon turns out to be. Weighing in at just two grams, hummingbirds are nature’s answer to the fairies in a fairy tale, but despite their therapeutic relationship, Terry’s own life is a fairy tale with long and deep shadows. With its stunningly beautiful visuals, ‘Every Little Thing’ is a great film about small creatures and how healing goes both ways.
