Can subjective consciousness be studied objectively? A philosophical and scientific dilemma looms large in a film about the mysteries of the brain, where life itself catches up with a neuroscientist.
Can subjective consciousness be studied objectively? In this immersive and contemplative feature, the mysteries of the brain meet the lived reality of the mind. Leading neuroscientist Anil Seth has dedicated his career to studying consciousness, but finds his professional and personal life intersect as science becomes personal. His quest to unravel the nature of the self is mirrored through the perspectives of three women – Wendy Mitchell, Pegeen O’Sullivan, and Maureen Winfield – who are each navigating dementia in transformative ways. As their familiar worlds shift and recede, they narrate changing perceptions, unexpected resilience, and the emergence of new forms of identity where others might only see loss. With striking visuals and a rich, textured soundscape, Conscious invites audiences inside these altered landscapes of awareness, asking: what remains of us when our internal landscape fragments?
