Bulakna
Leonor Noivo / Portugal / 2025 / 93 min
Two Filipino women are heading in different directions in life, but face the same choices in a film that subtly connects postcolonial realities and storytelling.
Between two Filipino women – one younger and one older – a quietly moving and exquisitely cinematic film unfolds about the inequalities of a postcolonial world and the human consequences of economic exile. One is a young islander considering going into exile in Europe. The other was a journalist in her home country, but has been working in Lisbon for years and is now considering returning home.
Leonor Noivo’s debut film is equal parts realism and storytelling. A hybrid film about two people whose lives and destinies are intertwined by structures larger than themselves. They are forced to navigate a global logic where care is a product and where they themselves are torn between duty and absence. The name Bulakna refers to an ancient Filipino warrior who fought against colonial invasion. Today’s female warriors may look a little different, but they are up against the same dark forces.
