          Broken English

          Jane Pollard & Iain Forsyth / United Kingdom / 2025 / 99 min

The legendary Marianne Faithfull's extraordinary life, told by herself and accompanied by George MacKay, Tilda Swinton, and Nick Cave in a deeply original film by the duo behind ‘20,000 Days on Earth’.

Marianne Faithfull’s life is full of contrasts. The convent school girl who got married as a teenager. One of the ultimate it-girls of the 60s and Mick Jagger’s partner. Pop singer, folk singer, new wave icon, drug addict, and a one-woman army against the misogynistic male gaze. ‘Broken English’ tells the story of a musical life lived to the fullest—but in a way never seen before.

Similar to the acclaimed Nick Cave film ‘20,000 Days on Earth’ by the same directing duo, the film blends several genres in a completely unique and original way. The film takes place in the fictional Ministry of Not Forgetting—a Terry Gilliam-esque world of screens and devices led by Tilda Swinton—where we meet a genuine, unscripted Marianne Faithfull. She is lovingly interviewed by George MacKay, who lays out archive material from Faithfull’s many eras, musical transformations, love affairs, and much more. And as the crowning glory, a final duet between Faithfull and her good friend Nick Cave. It turns out to be her last performance.
