When Covid-19 shut down Denmark in 2020, almost 400 children and young people started filming their new everyday lives. It has now become a unique insight into children's lives during the pandemic.
When Covid-19 shut down Denmark in early 2020, nearly 400 children and young people began filming their new everyday lives. Through a myriad of voices, ‘When Denmark Shut Down’ shows unique children’s stories and experiences. Such as Lærke, who has childhood arthritis and is not allowed to return to school. And Filippa, who is not allowed to see her much-loved but cancer-stricken grandmother. Or Ella, a 12-year-old instagrammer who turns to social media to cope with the crisis, and Alend, who thought he was going to play computer games 24/7 but ends up in the forest. The film makes room for unique voices, but through aesthetic stylisations, it also portrays the thoughts and feelings that ran through the minds of Denmark’s children and young people. This is Danish history at children’s level.

Norwegian animation director Endre Lund Eriksen's film about children's lives during Covid-19 is a loving little tale of life in isolation.
In a snowy Norwegian apartment block, life has changed during the coronavirus pandemic. School is closed and 10-year-old Lily is at home 24 hours a day with her mum, who is not feeling well and tries to keep her spirits up by drinking beer. Mum’s beer is Lily’s secret, but when one of Lily’s classmates finds out what’s going on at Lily’s house, she gets scared. Luckily, help sometimes comes from where you least expect it. A loving children’s story about life in isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic. Endre Lund Eriksen won an award at the Chicago Film Festival for this little animated gem.
