Becoming Ema
Patricia Drati / Denmark, Spain & Slovakia / 2026 / World Premiere / 83 min
A young woman defies her parents' wishes and the pressure of society, and moves to the forest to start a family close to nature. But the road to becoming herself is long and difficult.
Most people have probably dreamed of jumping off the hamster wheel, moving to the countryside, and living a simple life close to nature. But Ema has done it. Together with her husband, Tomas, she has defied both her parents’ expectations and society’s norms, and chosen her own path. The young couple has withdrawn their savings and bought a plot of land in the countryside to start a family where they can embrace the transformative powers of parenthood together.
But not everything is idyllic. Ema’s choice to prioritize her family over her career and security creates a deep rift between her and her parents, who find it difficult to accept her choice. While Ema and Tomas struggle with financial difficulties, Ema goes to therapy to reflect on herself and her choices. For perhaps the recognition she seeks from her parents must come from within herself. Patricia Drati’s debut film is a poignant film about embracing life and oneself, exuding love, friendship, and cinematic poetry.
