Azza
Stefanie Brockhaus / Germany & Saudi Arabia / 2025 / World Premiere / 87 min
An existential road movie from Saudi Arabia where a brave woman is determined to create a life on her own terms. A close friendship with a filmmaker opens the door to new horizons.
You don’t see much of life in Saudi Arabia on the big screen. But here is a film that brings images and stories to life in the Middle Eastern country. Through her intimate friendship with filmmaker Stefanie Brockhaus, we meet Azza – a brave and rebellious Saudi woman who was denied an education due to an oppressive patriarchal system, but follows her dreams of freedom at all costs.
Determined to make her own money, Azza teaches other women as a freelance driving instructor. Behind the wheel of her big black Toyota, she feels safe, proud – and free. She speeds down the country’s roads and highways. From the city to the endless desert, nothing can stop her.
When her husband allows her to travel for a few days with the film crew, Azza discovers for the first time the beauty and possibilities that nature in her country has to offer, and a true sense of belonging. ‘Azza’ is the moving story of one woman’s liberation and in inspiring (driving) lesson in how to break free when life tries to put a spoke in the wheel.
