Amongst the Birds
Mika Kaurismäki, Ragnar Axelsson & Ingvar Þórðarson / Iceland / 2026 / World Premiere / 83 min
Understated Icelandic humour and breathtaking landscapes in a charming and picturesque film about birds and people – and about a deeply lovable elderly couple and their friends.
Loðmundarfjörður is located at the easternmost tip of Iceland. There are few people out there. On the other hand, there is a rich bird life of migratory eider birds, which fly great distances to lay their eggs right here. When the season arrives, the lovely elderly couple Ólafur and Jóhanna are ready to welcome them with homemade birdhouses. Occasionally, their friends and family drop by their shed for a cheerful chat and a good, strong cup of coffee. Everyone is ready to lend a helping hand in the preparations.
‘Amongst the Birds’ is an understatedly funny film about birds and people, and about taking good care of the little corner of the world where you happen to live. You can almost smell the grass and the salt of the sea in the magnificent images from the breathtaking east coast. And when the flying guests finally arrive, a balustradic drama begins in the air and on land.
