A Fox Under a Pink Moon
Mehrdad Oskouei & Soraya - / Iran, Türkiye & Greece / 2025 / Danish Premiere / 76 min
Over five years, young Soraya documents her repeated attempts to flee Iran for Europe with her mobile phone.
Soraya grew up in Iran as the daughter of Afghan refugees. Her father died early, her mother later fled to Europe, and Soraya was left with a violent uncle. Today, she is married to a man who continues the control and violence. But then she decides to flee.
The film is told exclusively through Soraya’s own recordings, filmed with her Galaxy phone. The camera becomes her only confidant as we follow her on her escape routes, in her hiding places and in her home with her violent husband. Sixteen-year-old Soraya processes her fear and grief through art. The figures from her watercolours come to life: A fox that accompanies her and a pink moon that watches over her. ‘A Fox Under the Pink Moon’ won the main prize at IDFA and is a moving first-hand account of escape, art and resistance – and a rare self-portrait of a young woman who refuses to let her life be reduced to a question of passports and borders.
