A conversation about trust, power, and the future of documentary.

Drawing on audience research, media theory, and the growing impact of synthetic media, we’ll examine how truth has never been fixed, but is now increasingly fluid, personalised, and context-dependent. As AI blurs the line between fact and fabrication, the question may no longer be “What is truth?” at all, but “What is reality – and how can we know that”? If seeing is no longer believing, how do audiences decide what is real? What happens to precision, verification, and public service values in the post-truth world And how should documentary rethink its relevance, ethics, and craft in an AI-augmented media ecosystem?

Joe Bini is a writer, editor and filmmaker working in both fiction and nonfiction forms.

My work evolves around exploring the intersection of media, technology, and society, looking at how immersive technologies, AI, and digital transformation might shape the future media landscape. I have a strategic background in the media industry and as advisor and keynote speaker.

Sameer Padania

Sameer Padania is an independent researcher and strategist working to build healthy public interest information ecosystems and reduce information inequality, both in the UK and around the world. He works with diverse stakeholders - from philanthropies and city administrations to civil society, media organisations and think tanks, including, most recently, with the German Marshall Fund and with Demos - on strategies, policies and funding mechanisms to build democratic information infrastructure, including public service media.

Tabitha Jackson

As the newly appointed director of Film Forum, New York's legendary non-profit arthouse movie theater, Tabitha has an unshakeable belief in independent cinema and civic media as essential public goods. She is the former director of the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Documentary Film Program, an Emmy-winning director-producer, commissioning editor, and podcaster. Tabitha is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and currently a fellow at MIT’s Open Documentary Lab.

Mark Atkin

Mark Atkin is the curator of CPH:DOX Inter:Active and Head of Studies of the CPH:LAB, CPH:DOX’s talent development programme, supporting visionaries to push the boundaries of documentary storytelling. He curates Electric Dreams, a programme dedicated to Immersive Storytelling at Adelaide Fringe Festival. He is part of Immersive Arts, the UK’s funding and development programme for immersive artists; and QUAFF, a fund supporting queer artists. He is on the steering committee for the Annwn Prize, the world’s first prize for excellence in Immersive Storytelling. His award-winning immersive and interactive productions have been exhibited at major arts institutions around the world.
