Youth (Homecoming)
Bing Wang / France, Netherlands & Luxembourg / 2024 / 152 min
The workers are leaving the factory to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Wang Bing's panoramic film about the dreams and dramas of young workers in the country's textile factories.
Wang Bing is considered to be China’s greatest documentarian, and his ‘Youth’ trilogy is a monumental achievement in contemporary documentary filmmaking. In the third and final instalment – which can be viewed independently of the other two parts – the workers finally leave the factory to return home to their families to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year. It is a long journey for many of the young migrant workers in the northern garment factories, but it is also a time when they can finally clock out and be themselves for a moment. ‘Youth (Homecoming)’ is a panoramic work that simultaneously documents the changes in modern China and the dreams and hopes of the young generation. The film is the third and independent part of Wang’s ‘Youth’ trilogy, the second part of which is also screened at this year’s festival.
