‘The Battle for Laikipia’ + Debate: Is this really happening? Colonialism and Climate Crisis
Join us as we delve into how year-old colonialism and the current climate crisis intersect to affect human rights in Kenya and beyond.
In the film we meet the young Samburu pastoralist Simeon – and the landowner Maria – and explore how climate change adds a new sort of challenge to the ongoing trauma of colonialism, affecting the mere ability to survive.
Together with Dr. and Junior Research Fellow at Oxford University, Mads Yding, and Sarah Mpapuluu, producer from Kenya and part of the Generation Africa delegation at CPH:DOX, we take a closer look at the creative documentary film, – produced in Kenya to explore its topic, cinematic style and approach to genre.
We aske the question: Can documentary film act as a force for change on the African continent? And who should be able to tell the stories on film?
The conversation will be moderated by Vasna Ramasar, Assistant Professor in Human Ecology at Lund University, who is also a founding member of the Collective Against Environmental Racism and Global Tapestry of Alternatives.
After the screening, ‘Africa Engage’ offers a free drink (w/o alchohol) at Asta Bar.
Presented in collaboration with Bullitt Film and Film Lab Zanzibar in connection with their ‘Africa Engage’ project, supported by OPEN. A project enhancing professional cooperation with Africa & better insight into the African continent through film.
