Join us for a special preview of the critically acclaimed documentary 'As the Tide Comes In' as we celebrate the release of the full program for CPH:DOX 2024 in cinemas nationwide on February 21.

‘As the Tide Comes In’ provides the audience with a heartwarming and rare glimpse into the lives of the 27 residents of the island Mandø and their struggle against climate change and depopulation. On February 21, we invite you to a the first screening of the film at Grand Teatret in Copenhagen and in nine other municipalities, all part of DOX:DANMARK. The film will also be screened simultaneously on the Danish inhabited small islands, who wish to join this unique event.

‘As the Tide Comes In’ is a respectful portrayal of a unique community that raises acute awareness of the challenges Mandø and other small islands face. In an attempt to preserve the island’s unique culture and history, the residents steadfastly hold onto their identity despite the fear that their homes may soon become a memory.

After the screenings, the film sets the stage for a debate that will be livestreamed to cinemas nationwide, allowing the audience to contribute with questions, ideas, and experiences.

The screening of ‘As the Tide Comes In’ on the 21st can be experienced at: Grand Teatret, Øst for Paradis, Hedehusene Bibliotek, Aalborg Bibliotek, Bibliografen, Musikteatret, Frederiksværk Bibliotek, Sønderborghus, Ribe Bibliotek, Gentofte Bibliotek, Trommen, and Varde Bibliotek.

“Our goal with both the first screening and the nationwide distribution is to show how films can bring people together and inspire dialogue on important and current issues. ‘As the Tide Comes In’ represents more than just entertainment; it is part of a larger discussion about the future of Danish small islands. With the population of Danish small islands halved since the 1930s and climate change threatening their existence, the film is an important reminder of our collective responsibility to protect these unique communities,” says Niklas Engstrøm, Artistic Director of CPH:DOX.

‘As the Tide Comes In’ is directed by Juan Palacios and co-directed by Sofie Husum Johannesen, produced by Elk Film, and distributed in cinemas by CPH:DOX, with support from the Danish Film Institute and TV 2.”
