New Nationwide Initiative Uses Documentary Films to Engage Youth in New Communities
CPH:DOX aims to engage more young people. This year and next, the film festival is expanding its youth-focused efforts in five Danish cities with the goal of fostering civic and democratic engagement. This initiative builds on the festival’s long-standing commitment to youth participation through its Youth Editorial Team, nationwide film screenings, and a free workshop program organized in collaboration with volunteer associations.

Since 2021, CPH:DOX has been present across Denmark through DOX:DANMARK, which has continued to grow. This year, more than half of the country’s municipalities will be screening documentary films during CPH:DOX from March 19 to 30. Alongside this, the festival has launched a Youth Editorial Team comprised of young individuals who develop and produce activities for the festival.
Over the next two years, with support from the Tuborg Foundation, the festival will extend its experiences from the capital to at least five municipalities nationwide. Documentary films are particularly effective in engaging young people in new communities. A survey found that 24% of CPH:DOX audiences reported joining associations or activist groups after attending a film screening and debate event.
“We know that the combination of watching a documentary, participating in a debate, and meeting passionate individuals and organizations not only creates new knowledge but also fosters initiative and a desire for engagement,” says Marie Erbs Ørbæk, Head of Live and Partnerships at CPH:DOX. She continues: “The support from the Tuborg Foundation now enables us to explore whether this engagement can also lead to increased volunteerism and the formation of new communities.”
The new cities will host screenings of documentary films addressing major societal issues such as the climate crisis, refugee policies, and the mental health challenges of marginalized youth. Following the screenings, a program of talks, debates, and events will be arranged in collaboration with volunteer associations and organizations. Additionally, workshops will be available for young people, where they will work alongside these organizations to develop campaigns, write opinion pieces, and produce podcasts.
“CPH:DOX is not just about showcasing fantastic documentary films. The festival integrates the films into a social context through debates, discussions, events, and workshops. This is where they can make a difference and create real change. We look forward to following young people as they engage with both powerful film narratives and new communities,” says Peter Giacomello, Secretary General of the Tuborg Foundation.
