‘Phantoms of the Sierra Madre’ + Talk: Who owns the story and who gets to tell it? Meet Bird Runningwater

We take on the discussion of cultural appropriation and the question of who has the right to tell which stories.

Can the film’s protagonist, Lars K. Andersen, tell the story of the Apaches? Can the director Håvard Bustnes tell Lars’ story, and can they even interfere in the lives and testimonies of the Apaches? And should we tell stories about and from peoples and cultures to which we do not belong?

Meet the film’s Apache producer Bird Runningwater (Cheyenne and Mescalero Apache Tribe), who for 25 years has worked for stronger representation of indigenous peoples in the film and television industry and supported indigenous storytellers globally.

After the film, he will speak with the film’s protagonists, Pius Garcia and Lars K. Andersen, as well as the film’s director, Håvard Bustnes.

Afterwards, the Norwegian Embassy will serve a glass of wine.
