Our Body
Claire Simon / France / 2023 / 168 min
Monumental and unfiltered story about women and their bodies, told empathetically and insightfully through the eyes of patients, doctors and nurses in a Parisian public hospital.
When celebrated French film director Claire Simon first walks into the Parisian hospital where she intends to make her next film, she has the idea that an illness will strike her during the making of the film. She wants to investigate what it really means to inhabit a woman’s body, and she does so in the public hospital. Here are pregnant women and women who want an abortion. Here are women who were once men and men who want to be women. There are women who are sick and women who are recovering. Here are women who laugh and women who cry, and women who give birth and give birth, operate and operate, come and go, live and die. Over the course of more than two and a half hours, ‘Our Body’ gives time and attention to all the human drama between the nurses and their patients, and then it examines whether there is any truth to Claire Simon’s initial thought of illness.
