          CPH:CONFERENCE - DAY 1: AFTERNOON (Panel 1)

WHAT IS TRUTH ANYWAY - DOCUMENTARY IN THE AGE OF MISTRUST

          14:00 - 14:50 Tirsdag 17. marts 2026 / 50 min

A conversation about trust, power, and the future of documentary.

Drawing on audience research, media theory, and the growing impact of synthetic media, we’ll examine how truth has never been fixed, but is now increasingly fluid, personalised, and context-dependent. As AI blurs the line between fact and fabrication, the question may no longer be “What is truth?” at all, but “What is reality – and how can we know that”? If seeing is no longer believing, how do audiences decide what is real? What happens to precision, verification, and public service values in the post-truth world And how should documentary rethink its relevance, ethics, and craft in an AI-augmented media ecosystem?

          More speakers TBA.

This session can only be purchased as part of the full afternoon bundle.

          Speakers

          Joe Bini

Joe Bini learned the art of cinematic storytelling through editing unscripted documentary and imaginative narrative films. He has worked with some of the greatest living filmmakers, including a 19-year relationship with Werner Herzog on such world-renown documentaries as “Grizzly Man,” “Cave of Forgotten Dreams," and “Into the Abyss,” and narrative films such as “Rescue Dawn” and “The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.” He also edited Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “You Were Never Really Here” and Andrea Arnold’s “American Honey” and “Bird.” Recent documentaries include, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed," by Laura Poitras, “Remake” by Ross McElwee and “Below the Clouds” by Gianfranco Rosi. His focus on cinematic exploration and the boundaries of visual language has led him to more experimental forms such as two live theater/ film pieces he co-wrote and directed, “A Thousand Thoughts,” about the Kronos Quartet, and “Little Ethiopia,” a dialogue about life and film. His current project is an experimental storytelling device that combines cinema and literature, called “Burden of Other People’s Dreams” that premiered at CPH:DOX in March.
