Three trendsetting design brands transform Kunsthal Charlottenborg during CPH:DOX

Kunsthal Charlottenborg will barely be recognisable when CPH:DOX moves in from March 23 to April 3, 2022. With interiors from CPH:DOX’s three new partners &Tradition, Flos and PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED, the exhibition space will be converted into an international festival palace where the audience can experience documentary films, a contemporary art exhibition, interactive works, debates, an industry forum and a café lounge.

Yellow, red, blue, purple and pink. The audience will be met by an explosion of colours when they stop by Kunsthal Charlottenborg during the documentary film festival CPH:DOX. Inspired by Mark Rothko’s vibrant universe, the exhibition space’s walls will be wrapped in 1000 m2 of colorful textiles and transformed into a festival palace, which makes up the heart of CPH:DOX during the 12 festival days.

The concept for Kunsthal Charlottenborg is created by the architects Lise Birgens Kristensen and Anne Dorthe Vester, who says:
“Mark Rothko was a big inspiration behind this project. Several of his paintings are huge and fill up entire walls – a method he used to make the spectator a part of the experience rather than separated from the painting. Like Rothko, we are trying to create a sense of being wrapped in colours and space, so the audience will have a bodily experience when they visit Kunsthal Charlottenborg.”

&Tradition, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and Flos
Kunsthal Charlottenborg will be furnished with interiors from the trendsetting design brands &Tradition, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and Flos, who are CPH:DOX’s new collaborative partners.

“This year, we have the opportunity to combine furniture and lighting from &Tradition, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and Flos, which is a great quality for the project. The three brands are different yet complement each other really well. PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED has a playful and colourful universe with a focus on quality, &Tradition is part of the Nordic design tradition with classic designs as well as tomorrow’s classics, and Italian Flos has an international expression with a wide selection of both new and old designs,” says Lise and Anne Dorthe.

The furniture and lighting from the three design brands gets a new purpose in the hands of Lise Birgens Kristensen and Anne Dorthe Vester, who among other things will create a large work consisting of 30 mirrors from PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and a light installation with lamps by Michael Anastassiades for Flos. Furthermore, visitors can look forward to experiencing two special movie theaters, a curated art exhibition, an interactive exhibition, a festival café as well as several talk and lounge areas.

Special surroundings for great film experiences
Every room of the festival palace works with the horizontal line and colour combinations, which differ from room to room. Space and interior melts together and create a wholesome experience for the visitors, who will get more than a great film experience when they visit CPH:DOX at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

“CPH:DOX differs from other documentary film festivals because of the many exciting things that happen around film screenings l – and obviously this should reflect in the festival palace. We could easily just place a lot of exquisite furniture in Kunsthal Charlottenborg, but we try to create a different visual experience for the festival’s guests,” say the architects.

CPH:DOX’s festival palace is open to everyone from March 23 to April 3, 2022. The film and event programme will be announced March 1 with details of all the events at Kunsthal Charlottenborg and the other venues around Copenhagen.
