The ACADEMY CLASSES is an additional option in the shape of five different four-day intensive courses taking place during CPH:DOX on fixed dates from March 20-23, 2018.

If accepted into a class you will join an exclusive group of international students from various fields and institutions. The classes consist of intensive group discussions, exclusive sessions with directors visiting the festival and specially curated film screenings in the evening. In order to create a concentrated learning atmosphere based on exchange and participation, the ACADEMY CLASSES are limited to 15-35 participants per Class. Participating students are expected to attend all activities and to actively contribute to the course, and in order to apply you will be asked to provide a motivational text.

We offer five ACADEMY CLASSES representing five lines of study with a full day programme and specially curated film screenings in the evening. All five Classes are cross-disciplinary and explore the intersection between different practices by bringing together students, teachers and artists/experts from different professional backgrounds:

  • F:ACT CLASS is dedicated to the field between investigative journalism, documentary and social impact. The F:ACT Class creates an exchange between documentary films, journalism and contemporary political activism. The film screenings and discussions will be closely linked to the F:ACT programme of the festival, and to the debates dealing with recent political and societal discourses. Besides focusing on the aesthetics and methods of investigative documentaries, there will be space to reflect on empowering moments when “telling one’s story”. Do you want to see or change the World through a camera lense? Join the F:ACT-movement!
  • CRITICS’ AND CURATORS’ CLASS is a place for critics, curators and artists to meet and discuss how can we speak about and fascilitate documentaries. Here emerging critics and curators are given the opportunity to develop their understanding and skills in the overlapping fields of criticism and curation. Getting to see a variety of films at the festival, the Class also explores the overall goal of CPH:DOX – to showcase the Documentary genre as an artform – and how this is interconnected to curative practices in the Art world. The participants of the CRITICS’ Class will get insights to backstage processes of curating a documentary festival such as CPH:DOX as well as meet critics from some of the leading film journals. Constantly moving between theory and practice, this Class allows students from a various range of disciplines and academic or artistic fields to look into ways of discussing and facilitating modern documentaries. This is one of the most idealistic courses of dox:academy – trying to renew, change and challenge the practices of Film- and Art criticism.
  • SCIENCE CLASS examines the representation, visualization and storytelling of scientific research and how scientific research shapes and influences both society and contemporary documentaries. It will be closely linked to the science-programme of CPH:DOX. Across scientific disciplines and academic background this course is for students that take departure in their own research practise and want to work with film in relation to scientific topics and methods. In the SCIENCE CLASS you will experience the best new documentaries about scientific topics and get to know other students and researchers who work in between science and cinema. SCIENCE CLASS is a place for professional and creative exchanges where the students see and discuss as many films about science as possible.
  • SOUND CLASS offers a sound perspective on documentary practices by exploring the connection between documentary and sound art. Composers, musicians and film directors has a lot to learn from each other. Focusing on the exploration of the artistic potential of sound-based documentary the four-day programme will open up for discussions about the uses of sound in modern documentaries. In masterclasses, workshops and discussions, the participants of the SOUND Class get the chance to meet and connect with other students and international professionals from the field of sound and film.
  • HYBRID CLASS examines the field between contemporary art / film and academic research, especially anthropology. The class gives the participants a unique insight in how international directors and artists create their projects today, both theoretically and methodically. There will be an additional focus of the experimental form of documentary and reflection on it as an artistic practice that test the boundaries of filmic expressions of the real. The screenings will be closely linked to the section of experimental films in the head programme of the festival: NEW:VISION. Here, artist’s films and new forms of video will be presented. The programmes for each DOX:ACADEMY CLASS are closely connected to the general programme at CPH:DOX and are formed after the schedules of the many visiting film professionals at CPH:DOX. For this reason applicants for the course will have their full day programme shortly before the course. Expect intensive full day programmes from 10 am to 3 pm and film screenings all evening.

We do it because DOX:ACADEMY is the kind of thing we would really have wanted to take part in ourselves.

CPH:DOX brings hundreds of international filmmakers, artists, journalists, experts and other professionals to Copenhagen for the festival in March. DOX:ACADEMY is about making the most of it all, and is dedicated to ambitious students who wish to engage fully in the festival.

We think a festival such as CPH:DOX is an ideal place to let students from different fields, institutions and academic traditions meet and form creative networks. Designed as an experimental “learning lab” in previous years, DOX:ACADEMY has been a highly productive space where students have organised themselves in the network created during the festival, and some have developed cross-disciplinary art and research projects.

The DOX:ACADEMY is open to individuals and groups from schools and universities.

Give us a shout at! We are looking forward to hear from you.
