The contrast could hardly be greater between a war-torn Afghanistan, where football stadiums are used for executions, and Paris St Germain, a football club that has become an international symbol of glittering wealth and opulence. Nevertheless, that is the journey Danish football star Nadia Nadim has made. 20 years after fleeing Afghanistan with her family because her father was killed, she now plans to return to the war-torn country to find her father’s buried military medals – all the while fighting to become French champion with Paris St Germain and break arch-rivals Lyon’s streak of 14 consecutive championships.
