When and how is a filmmaker prepared to cover high risk situations, resistance from powerful companies and repressive regimes? How do you take the right practical and ethical precautions when you are in the middle of an unstable event in Ferguson or Nairobi, Bogotá or Manila, where filmmaking sometimes comes at the price of risking your life? On the fourth day of the conference, The Safe + Secure session will guide filmmakers on how to assess and mitigate the plethora of risk faced whilst making a film. From fact checking in an era of fake news to managing a Dark PR attack. And from mitigating physical danger in the field, to managing emotional trauma in crew & subjects.

Date: Thursday, March 22
Time: 10:00 – 17:00
Location: Social Cinema
Kunsthal Charlottenborg

The day is curated by Doc Society  and hosted by:

Journalistic Integrity or Bust?

Why should good journalism matter to a creative filmmaker?  In an era where it is getting harder to see the truth, where reality is being manipulated, making sure that our journalism as independent documentary filmmakers is accurate, fair and protected, has never been more essential – even for creative filmmakers who don’t see themselves as journalists.

Dark PR: Are you ready for battle?

This is the new mantra for controlling the media and public discourse: DISMISS the opponent – DISTORT the facts – DISTRACT from the central issue – DISMAY the audience. Filmmakers who get uncomfortably close to the truth are now being targeted. From Gasland to No Fire Zone and White Helmets – documentaries that matter are worth taking down, and the community needs to be prepared.
