With or Without the Sun

Exhibition about the essay film and Japanese culture at SixtyEight Art Institute.

Following a thematic line seen in many western essay-style films of the 1970s and 80s, the exhibition engages with the portrayal of Japanese culture. The exhibition title refers to Chris Marker’s 'Sans Soleil' (1983), an essay film that in both its cinematic technique and its sensitive, probing way of exploring Japanese culture, has become a major reference point for the essay film in itself and in its overwhelming interest in Japan. Besides showing a number of essay films by western directors from the 1960s up until today, the exhibition will also screen a number of Japanese directors’ portrayals their own culture. In the meeting of the Western, often quite literal essay form, and the more personal, self-documentary turn seen in the Japanese essay film tradition, the exhibition With or Without the Sun seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion of what the essay film is as a form, while adding an extra dimension to its ongoing relation to and interest in Japanese culture.
