Spectres are Haunting Europe

Desperate refugees are haunting Europe, and in Greece the inhabitants of the Idomeni camp revolt when the authorities make a move.

Greece's largest refugee camp in Idomeni until recently housed more than 8,000 refugees from the Middle East, who were heading into Europe. But when the Greek police moved in with excavators to clear the camp, the refugees resisted and blocked a cargo railway. Maria Kourkouta's minimalist documentary not only follows and observes the events in the camp, but also makes use of elegant and illustrative images, which open up the film – both inside and outside the story – and binds a poetic ribbon in black and white around the entire chaotic situation in Greece. As a result, 'Spectres are Haunting Europe' is a gloomy but sober portrait of a place, where endless waves of refugees are desperately trying to cling on to the last scraps of their individual liberties and rights.
