Beyond the Visible - Hilma af Klint

Overlooked when she was alive, but celebrated as a genius today. Abstraction was more than shapes and colours pioneering artist Hilma af Klint.

The art world is confronted with a sensational discovery a hundred years too late. How could it happen that an artist who discovered abstract painting at the beginning of the 20th century remained largely unnoticed? Today, we know that the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint was one of history's most important pioneers in abstract art. She painted her first abstract painting in 1906, four years before Kandinsky. Nonetheless, she was ignored in a male-dominated art world, which at best was only interested in her figurative work. Until her death in 1944, she was only a peripheral figure. A number of major exhibitions at museums such as Louisiana have placed her among the greatest and most visionary artists of her times. Abstraction was more than just pure forms and colours for her, but represented complex philosophical world systems. Halina Dyrschka's film tells the full story of a female pioneer.
